Default Mes/Ran and lvling...

I recently made a mes/ran and I find it pretty difficult to solo with him. I was wondering if anyone who has made a similar char could comment or help me out here. I was thinking that maybe the best way to go in order to get up there faster, that I should maybe concentrate on the ranger side of it and buffing it up to get more dmg out. I know that the mesmer side isn't made for dmg really and this seems to be where I'm having my problems.
So, I guess the question is maybe if I wanted to use the mesmer side for dmg, do I stick with the illusion line for the DoTs or do I go with something else, IE. spec in the ranger skills for dmg from that side?

i'd simply suggest joining a party, my mesmer monk isn't too easy to level either but I make do I suppose, mind you I can heal which allows me to survive the battles

Perhaps bring along Troll ungent and buff it up?

Mesmers are great at PvP but can find things a little rough at PvE. So you need to ask yourself how are you going to kill the enemy and soak damage?

The ranger has a whole host of great skills that can perform this at ease. With regeneration skills, pets, nice ranged damages etc. I'd use my mesmer skills to back this up when dealing with boss type creatures or healing mobs. But thats just me!

In PvP then your mesmer skills can really help control the battlefield via assisting vs your team's targets. (So can your Pet and those pin down type attacks)

I have this combo and actually love it. I'm lvl 12 right now and yes it's difficult in some areas but that's when you get friends to go with or grab henchies. I'm working mostly domination magic spells and using a flatbow as my primary weapon. I have troll ungent in my skills along with the charm animal and comfort animal. My cat is the same level as I am. With the domination spells I target the magic using creatures first because I can knock out 100hp with two spells. Then the nonmagic creatures if they're huddled together I use an area spell that slowly depletes there HP while I shot arrows at them and my cat claws them. By the time 1 is down the others that were huddled are low on HP and it takes little time to kill them. My arrows are doing around 20 points of dmg, I feel balanced with this character. Once I get to tougher areas though that might be different, I just finished the mission to get me to Nolani Academy.

Ditto on that. I got my Mes/R up to 13th level exclusively by soloing (with two henchies). The only benefits of the ranger class I use are for Beast Mastery so I can bring my warthog along. I equip the two skills required to have a pet along, the Rez Signet, and 1 illusion spell (Create Phantasm I think it's called) and everything else into Domination magic.

I've found that my pet is equal to a decent offensive spell which constantly deals out damage without any energy expenditure and also provides a sturdy meat shield with the fighter. The healer also heals it so I rarely have to worry about maintaining him.

I tried using some of the other ranger skills but found that they weren't very useful unless you pump them up. Using a bow without a decent archery level and at least a couple of complimentary skills is like attacking with a sword that has no blade. All those skill I've thrown into Domination instead and it can really cause havoc at higher levels. Backfire is particularly powerful against enemy healers. That spell alone can shorten a battle by 50% when properly applied.

All in all, the Ranger class gives me a pet, which as a spellcaster, is ideal because he will soak up damage in front of me while I blister off the magic. It's a good combo.
